21 clutch confusion! (SP)

Sun Aug 13, 2006 6:35 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

My clutch has been slipping for a bit now, and as a makeshift idea, i grabbed some spare clutch parts from my big box of spares. *EDIT* These clutch parts were taken from spare donor engine that was running this setup (i never run) **

Anyhow, the assembly i've just fitted has all 2mm steel plates and an extra clutch plate (6). The total thickness of this arrangement is the same as what i have removed.

Is this an aftermarket race clutch setup? I took it for a quick blat to the end of the street and back, and the clutch feels better than the one that was in it. *EDIT* Is noisier than before at idle due to no dampner rubbers able to be fitted**

(what I had in it i believe to be original, 5 clutch plates, 6 steel :1 at 2mm the rest at 2.7ish)

Any idea's as to what I've fitted? I havent fit wet type to a dry have I??

Anyone able to shed light? A bit hesitant to take it out too far......
Cheers!

**EDIT**...........Somehow I think matty's going to take some more money off me for some clutch parts... Hey Matt do you sell inner clutch assemblies, mine has decent wear on the teeth........... Anyone do billet clutch parts?

It sounds like your running a set of wet clutch steels coupled with a extra dry clutch friction plate. Should work as long as the steels are up to the job.

Thanks stephen,

The bike definitely ran better than my super used up job, like u though, i suspected wet on dry action.... Maybe i'll take it for a burn to see if it holds up...

Thank you for the reply stephen, appreciate it!

A good plan is to run all thick steel plates of the correct total quantity.

No damper rubbers makes for a good noise at the traffic lights.

A knackered clutch hub makes more noise as the plates jangle back and forth, but can also make the clutch judder if it gets too bad, which can make a smooth quick getaway from the lights a bit of a struggle, and instantly destroys any cred you gained from having a noisy clutch.

clutch shudder bigtime, smooth getaways are non existant....

This other setup ive put in seems a hellava lot better than what was in there, however, after some thought i feel the thinner plates are going to heat too easily.

Cheers Matt! you'll be hearing from me next paycheck!! Very Happy

just an update, because I'm trying to figure out if I need new inner + outer clutch hubs....

Threw my original clutch setup back into the bike, but cleaned up in carb cleaner, and I threw all the plates + frictions in, in same order only back to front (so that the worn out teeth were facing backwards, meaning unworn are now taking load) EXCEPT THE INNER AND OUTER STEELS....

The bike now makes a hellava lot less clutch noise, and doesn't slip as much. Far less(!) shudder.

The hubs have approx. 1.5mm wear on the teeth mating surfaces... I am about to order the clutch parts, but can anybody tell me if I should be replacing the hubs? I fear that the teeth on the clutch plates etc may wear prematurely due to the hubs being worn.......

Any advice or help would be highly appreciated!

(ps- are the hubs available new, or does any company/person make billet/cnc hubs? -cheeers, Lachlan)
