Dry Clutch Trouble

Wed Nov 08, 2006 8:23 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Heres the deal, as some of you may know I seized up my engine a few weeks back. Well I bought a used engine off yahoo auction and got it put in.

Heres the problem:
When the bike is in neutral, it rattles as it should, but when I put it into gear the rattle stops. When I'm at a light, its almost impossible to drop it back into neutral (the shifter wont budge). Whats the problem?

My other question is, since my clutch on my old engine is still useable, I tried to swap with the one right now. When I took out the plates from the old engine there were a total of 10. In the engine thats in my bike now, there were 13, and without the damper rubbers.

Anyway I threw in the plates from the old engine into the new one, except now when I pull in the clutch, it wont grab and my bike wont move.

How many plates are there supposed to be? Plus did I do something wrong when putting the plates in?

Thanks

On a dry clutch there should be
4 of one type of fibre and 1 of another
5 of one type of steel and 1 type of another
TOTAL 11 plates
Dont count the plates in the picture as there are only 8
You need numbers
6, 7, 9 and 10

It wont move because you have too many plates fitted and so it will not be able to engage properly.

Ok, fitted the right amount of plates; 11.

When I put it into gear, clutch wont engage, therefore wont move.

What could be the problem? Too much clutch wear?

You must have
1 steel plate 2.0mm limit 1.8mm
5 steel plates 2.9mm limit 2.6mm
5 fiber plates 4.0mm limit 3.5mm

Ok I'll take out the plates again and check.

I've been wokring on this damn clutch all day and cant get it to work.
I followed all diagrams, suggestions etc, but still no GO.

The bike only moves if I rev it up to like 7500-8000rpm, but then it still struggles, feels like i'm half clutching it the whole time when i'm not.

Need some suggestions!

And you've checked / adjusted the cable correctly?

Can`t remember on the NSR if the outer pressure plate has to mate with the centre in a certain way. Could be you need to move it round once on the spring mountings? (Rotate in either direction).
Also you haven`t just accidentally put two ball bearings in the pusher by any chance?
Check also that the lever on the left side of the engine is positioned correctly. The inner push rod shaft has to sit in the recess on the shaft of this lever.

Or left the ball bearing out

Sorry Wayne, if he`d left it out it should be dragging instead of not engaging.

Thats why I said that Roy.It's sound's like the clutch is just engaging when the clutch lever is fully out that's why he need to rev it to 7 to get it moving.

This is my point. If there were two bearings behind the pusher it wouldn`t allow the outer pressure plate to come back far enough to engage & "clutch" the plates. Thus not transmitting drive to the gearbox.
If there was no bearing, pulling in the clutch lever would result in the clutch "dragging", meaning it would try to pull forwards when the clutch is fully pulled in. You`d probably have to adjust the cable as far as it will go to get the clutch to release properly.
