Why did I start this project???

Wed Apr 04, 2007 8:45 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi guys

Having bought a '88 MC18 in boxes it has been quite a nightmare at times re-assembling everything without a manual or any real technical expertise! Although it is starting to come together and look very pretty, there are a couple of minor niggles preventing me from getting to excited!

I have the carbs in place and everything connected apart from the two nipples at the front of the outside of each carb. I assume these connect to the oil pump but of the two little pipes i have the one on the right side fits like a glove but the one on the left seems an inch too short???

The other problem is that i have the radiator and thermostat all plumbed in but the thermostat seems to sit very uncomfortably, pretty much suspended in mid air behind the radiator and in front of the top cylinder! Is this right? And finally on the side of the thermostat housing there is a threaded stub - what bolts onto that??

Thanks in advance if anyone can help - pics or diagrams would be perfect!

I dont really understand which nipples you are taling about but the oil feed nipples are on the back of the carbs facing in and up.

The thermostat does tend to sit alittle funny and by the sounds of it its in the right place.

The threaded stud comming out of the thermostat holds the rad overflow tank and should have a nut on it.

Stephen thanks for that peace of mind on the thermostat front!

U referred to the oil feed nipples being at the back of the carbs facing up and in. If these are the ones directly in front of the manifolds when the carbs are fitted on the bike then we are talking about the same ones! When i put the small pipes on these and connect to the oil pump the left hand side pipe is very stretched and seems too short really! Am i trying to do something which is obviously not right?

Cheers

Yes those are the right ones.

The oil pipes should go between the two boost bottles on the inlet manifold. This should give enough lenth for both pipes.

Yes, the thermostat sits in mid-air. The nut on the side is to bolt to the coolant overflow bottle / resivour (don't know how to spell that, sorry).
