Fri Aug 14, 2009 7:38 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hey lads, keen to know what your thoughts are. I have taken the barrels off for the 1st time since ive had it.. Heres a question.. Do i need to open these 3 ports or leave em blanked off..

I blow thru the water inlet at the top, and theres air gushing out so im thinkin they possibly should be cleared

Photobucket

Edit.. Razz

i made 2 gaskets outa .4 (gasket) paper from auto shop, rekkon thattl do the job?

They are just casting holes. Yes just clean the dirt out of them and the new gasket will seal them up.

I wouldn't be using 0.4mm gaskets on an otherwise stock motor unless I was advised too.

So theres no pressure either side of these cast holes, like, if the gaskets were cut here, would anything pass thru?

haven't used the gaskets yet, just tracing em up this stage. whats the recommended dosage?

Make the gaskets (if you must) the same as the Honda ones.

For the price of them I think I would be buying genuine ones.

Aftermarket gasket paper and OEM gaskets can differ in crush.

Ask Matt@TYGA; I seem to recall it was him who measured a load of different base gaskets... "because he could"!

I would only use gasket paper for non-essential areas like the clutch cover or water pump... if I had to! Like Steve says, paper gaskets are certainly not the most expensive part of any rebuild, but could cost you an expensive rebuild if you use substandard ones.

I have about 100 base gaskets for my RS250. All measured and noted so I can set my deck height to what I want based on the cylinder (which also gets measured).

I would defenitly not skimp on a base gasket. it's a much higher density material than a normal standard paper gasket material. Also has some additional sealent material in some important areas.

if your going to use it, make sure you just don't measure before assembly. Pull it apart after proper torque and measure what the crush was, then that will give you a good idea what your final desk height will be. Oh and once you get the crush measured, throw that out and make another set and go from there.

That's why it's usually a good idea (and a safe bet) to stick to stock. Seen plenty of examples of "tuned" setups that are far worse than a completely standard motor with the electronic restriction removed!

Back to your original post; if you have a look at the crankcases you will see that the coolant galleries that are "blanked" by the gaskets don't actually go anywhere! Wink
