Although a renewed design, such as the slanted nose provides an eye-catching apperience, the greatest feature for this model is the highly evolved PGM-II electronic control unit.

By utilizing smart 2-stroke technology, creates a wider low to mid range speed and torque curve with a "trapezoidal power band" while complying with stricter regulations and still providing maximum output, achiving a substantial improvement in driving performance. Even in the main engine components, the crankshaft has been strengthened and the weight of the pistons have been reduced by 10g, improving the cylinder head compression performance. Evolution can be seen everywhere, such as the structural improvements of the RC Valves.

The exhaust chambers are new with elliptical cross section and the bank angle is increased when the suspension is fully compressed from 29 to 42 degrees. The design of the upward swept exhaust pipe if the same design as the works bike.

Specifications of the frame have also been changes, such as shortening the distance between the axles and raising the casters. Pentagonal cross-section tubing is also used for the rear swing arm. For the front forks, internal adjustment mechanism has been added to the previous years air assisted suspension. The rear tire has been made wider and the front and rear tires are both radial tires.

NSR250R SP
Release Date: April 1, 1989

Equipped with a dry clutch and magnesium wheels.

This is the first SP model that utilizes a dry clutch. The standard model uses a wet multi-plate clutch. The dry clutch is mostly unaffected by rain or dust. There are many advantages such as smooth connection and excellent durability after many years of use. On race machines, they withstand overuse on starts while providing excellent dynamic transmission performance. Use of a multi-plate dry clucth does not produce oil resistance. The original high performance of the NSR has been "Purified" in this new SP model, it was decided to use this even in the commercial motorcycle. Since it is hard to see inside the cowling, the clutch sound that is emitted when the vehicle is stopped is exactly like the racing machine. Many riders have longed for the true significance of the enhancing peformance in the SP races.

The wheels are also made of magnesium like the previous year's SP model. As with the standard model, the rear tires have been changed from 140/60R18 to a larger 150/60R18. The rim size has also been expanded from 4.00-18 to 4.50-18 to accommidate the wider tire. The weight reduction from the standard model has been the same as previous years, the front is 700g, the rear is 800g, and a total of 1.5 kg of weight has been reduced.

Furthermore, the front and rear suspension are also different from the standard model. For the SP version, the front forks use a cartridge style damper system was adopted, which is the norm on the race models. There is also a variable damper adjuster, which can be adjusted in 12 steps. Like the standard model, there is also a spring adjustement mechanism. The spring is a single rate spring that emphasizes sportiness instead of a multi rate spring which is on the standard model.

The rear suspension has the same link ratio and spring rate as the standard edition (the spring length is different due to the difference in damper body). The shock uses a dampening method that can even be used in hard riding conditions. In addition, it is equipped with an adjuster that independently and easily adjusts the damping force on the extension and compression stroke. It provides performance for advanced sport riding and racing use.

The body color is only for the SP model. It is a Terra Racing Color that is based on the Honda Racing colors of the works team that participates in the world GP 250cc class.
