Is the NC35 front upgrade worth it?

Tue Jun 09, 2020 11:07 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

I was wondering what the performance gain was like fitting the RVF400 NC35 front end to the MC21?
Is it worth the effort and the cash? does it transform the bike? Is it added value to a future purchaser?

Or does keeping the bike standard suit better? Does fitting it negatively effect the resale price of the bike?
Make it turn slower etc...?

I appreciate any thoughts you might have on the subject. 👍

My own personal opinion Max, the only benefit is aesthetics, my 21 track bike had a well set up standard front end, and performed faultlessly, just ask Johnnymac who now owns that bike, and after riding countless track 21 and 28's some fitted with rvf front ends, he couldn't believe how well mine handled, and swears he will not change it one bit. Value wise, I think it depends who is buying said bike, the purist and collector looking for future investment will want the oem stuff and be prepared to pay a premium, where as on the other hand there are an awful lot of people looking for the modified stuff, for instance, myself, I prefer a well sorted track bike over a concours road bike.

In my opinion, it's imperative the NC35 forks are set up properly. I rode an MC21 with RVF400 forks years back, and it was awful. That's not to say they (or most other USD conversions) can't work though. My own MC21 has a USD (RS250R) conversion, so it would be hypocritical to say it's not worth it, however the RWU NF5 front-end was equally as good for someone of my limited ability, and a great improvement over the standard NSR forks. The problem with the HRC forks (both RWU and USD) is they're likely to cost over double what an RVF set will cost these days.

The biggest pain in the arse is the reduced steering lock, which there is nothing you can do about.

I agree with the guys on their points. I've fitted my mc28 SP forks with Ohlins dampers and springs. They work great on the track. Only reason to go USD is for the look.

Hello Andy and Eric. I'm looking at updating my MC28 sp forks as I've put on some lockdown pounds and feel I need heavier springs now.
I've picked up a Tyga Ohlins rear shock designed for the NSR
So this has shown the front to be lacking now.
So if be interested to know what Ohlins parts were used for the forks
Cheers

Initially I put a set of race tech valves in my forks but I just wasn't happy with them. Honestly the honda internals were not that much different from the race tech kit except the valving was set up for my weight.

I then talked to Ken at SB suspension (www.sbsuspension.com) and we discussed changing to an Ohlins damper, spring and oil. I shipped him the forks, he did the mods and sent me the old parts back. I'm very happy with how the forks are working. However, had I upgraded the spring with the race tech kit I may have had similar results. My recommendation at this point should be to first update the spring, make sure the inside is clean, and put in a good oil. You might find that is acceptable for your intended use.

As Eric says, the MC28SP fork is actually very good. It's just that it's set up around a 90s flyweight Asian teenager, that's the problem for most of us!

I'd suggest dropping HEL Suspension a line. Steve's K-Tech & Ohlins trained, and until this year, was race setup/support for a number of BSB teams. (He's stopped doing the support now because it was just taking too much out of his personal life). He's based at the HEL factory full-time again now, with a small dedicated workshop.
