Hi just wondering if anybody has ever successfully rebuilt a PGM 4 unit before? Mine has retired after ten years and it cost like 950 USD for a brand new one....I have heard rumors they can be rebuilt cheaply, but the black packing goo inside is a problem when you need to remove it....any electrical engineers here??? I am broke now and can't afford 950 for a new one if I can repair mine for 3 dollars in little parts
The goo can be removed, either by scraping or thinners (I think). I used a hot soldering iron as I like the smell (JOKE children - don't breathe that stuff in!)
As long as it hasn;t toasted the board itself, then the components can be replaced. Only way to find out is to start carfeully digging yourself and see what's what. _________________ MC21SP Plaything

in the past i have got goo off pcb,s with warmed (**NOT HOT**) methylated spirit i just put the pcb in it and leave it over night. it will depend on what type of potting/encapsulation compound has been used on the board.

sorry I cant help with your problem, I have no clue where to start.
But...
If it fails to be repairable, would you be willing to part with the PGMIV pretty cheap? Mine works excellent, but when I had that wreck in Japan that broke my collarbone, the front of the bike took a hit and cracked open the PGM case top. The PGM case is epoxied together and looks just a tad tacky. It would be nice if I could find a blown PGM unit so I can put the cover on my good PGM unit.
Since I had mine apart, I have just a tad info to offer. There is a switch that the keycard contacts when it is slipped into the key slot. Is that working properly? Are there error codes displayed? Is the display bad? I had to replace my display once already. The plastic top cover comes off from the lower aluminum PGM unit, but I dont remember how. I remember the black goo being extremely tough, so if you could find a solvent that loosens it up but does not hurt the board, that would be a huge help.

Hey, I also heard of a place in Tokyo called Kenso that supposedly has or had the ability to reprogram the NSR PGM's. I got that info from one of the Gaijinrider guys, and had a hard time believing it. You never know, though, maybe they can help you fix the PGM. _________________ Paul Herr

Hi Jamie, I've seen in another thread that you can get the black stuff off with a solvent called 'nitromors' or similar - I think you should be able to spot the blown component or track pretty easily if you get that far. I was going to try this on my MC16 CDI until I found one for $150 NZ at a local wreckers (that was VERY lucky). Good luck _________________ '87 MC16

I've tried paint stripper, thinners, acetone, sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide, and mixtures of all of the above. The best result was with a paint stripper and thinners mix, while heating it with the hot air gun.
In the end I used a scalpel and lots of patience.
Most of the components are available, but it'll be fun finding the dodgy part unless it's quite obviously blown to bits.
Hi Dave and Matt! Long time no talking...thanks for the tips!! I will try that after it warms up a bit in Japan. A friend of mine who is an electrical engineer at DENSO said he can try to help me out. I hope I can repair it, I have heard of a few PGM III guys in Japan doing this before and the parts cost was like 300 YEN or so which is dirt cheap. A new PGM IV cost like almost 1,000 USD.
