Is it safe to drill holes in my swing arm??

Thu Jan 19, 2006 11:38 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Yup, its true i want to drill 2 holes in the swing arm!!!!! i have a mc21 and im running a new rear master cylinder! the hose will now run accross the top of the arm down to the caliper, ID like to drill 1 maybe 2 holes into the swing arm and attache the hose, the holes i guss will be around 3mm in dia. and ill use a self tapping metal screw to hold the hose clamp in. IS THIS SAFE? or should i be looking at another way to keep the hose away from the wheel?

Sounds like a bad idea to me. I'm not an engineer or anything, but I wouldn't.

im thinking the same thing, but im sure ive read somewhere that when a hugger was being designed they had to put an extrat hole in the swingarm to screw it down, and when Max came round the other day (he has the same set up brake wise) im sure he said he put a small hole in the SA to secure it all. ????????? anyone else?

no i think there was talk about putting self tappers into the swingarm to fit an R1 style hugger, but all the aftermarket huggers i think bolt on using existing bolt holes

Alister it's ok but dont use a self tapper! See the link, this is whats used on the other side of your swinger... You can then use a correct mount for the cable.

I`ve drilled & tapped swingarms & frames for fixings before.

If the metal is thin like on the swingarm I`ve used the Riv-Nuts that Max has linked to.

I`m lucky that I use them at work, so my company supplies me with the proper installation kit!

One downside is that over time they can work loose & spin round.

You can buy side stands for moto-x bikes that bolt on with riv-nuts to the swingarm. I personally think that they would eventually pull out & maybe distort the metal unless you`re careful.

BUT ill have a good look at the weekend and if not ill go the route max has gone. at the end of the day its gona be used as a guide and shouldnt have any load on it in any direction. MAX what size did you go for?

I'd send you one, but you need a tool to secure it in...

small holes should be ok but if the metal is thin then leave it be or, make your hole and a bead of ally weld arounf it should stop anything untoward happening.

Shocked Good Lord no. Never drill any structural item. Have a tab welded on.

well i played around today, and although it could be neater the brake line will now run down the swing arm without a guide, for it to hit the tyre you'd need to pull it or push it into the tyre. so i wont be drilling now!!!!!
