Tank Slapper or steering shake

Thu Sep 11, 2008 7:23 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi, Just got my mc18 on the road and i must say im seriously impressed with how the bike goes but im a hard on the throttle out of a corner kind of guy. When hard on the gas out of a bend im finding the front end feeling flighty and wanting to tank slap. Is this normal?

Any ideas would be great on how to solve this. I have replaced all the head bearings during my rebuild.

It's been my experience that the NSR is pretty stable, I've owned an MC16 and now a MC21, and I can only guess that they didn't stuff it up inbetween. If the head races are in good shape, and tyre sizes are correct, then maybe raise the rear ride height (I think there is a pattern for an F3 shock bracket that will achieve this) or stiffen up the rear pre-load.

I know someone with an MC18 R5K who says it slaps really bad. Corners I would come out of on the MC21 without a second thought would often have him tied in knots! However, there's one sweeping uphill right-hander in particular that my '21 just hates, and he can just nail his MC18 all the way through it! Spooky! Laughing

The MC18 does appear to be more spritely than the other NSR's for some reason. Not sure if it's just the R5/6K or all MC18's though.

Mines a r5k. I think I will check the steering adjusment but I might invest in a damper of some sort. When I say it's lively I mean it's scary and it's all the time.

Yeah, he says his is "very lively", although I never saw it myself. I have no reason to doubt his word however, but he's rather good at hiding the shakes! Mind you, I'd normally be having to concentrate on making it round the corners chasing him istead of looking at how his steering was behaving.

He did say that it felt awful with a damper though, and soon took it back off.

I don't know if it was any better with the F3 link plates (and eventally F3 shock) and SP forks.

Maybe check the front/rear alignment. it might be a cause too.

Cheers for your input Max that was my next step, a mate of mine has some proper alignment bars they use on mot's so ill try them and go from there. I got some F3 link plates that i bought off a member on here (cant think of his name off hand) I will stick them on and try that also.

I would`ve thought if the F3 plates make the rear end higher, this will make the bike even more nervous out of corners.
Generally, raising the back of the bike will make the bike steer quicker.
Perhaps someone who has done the conversion will post their findings?

Also have a think about how you hold the bike, if you're not really loose on the bars when you're hard on the power the shake is going to be 1000 times worse but any time you're hard on the power over bumps and leaned over it's likely to get a bit flighty.
I'd rather the odd lock to lock shake than the woolly detached feeling you get with a steering damper though. I'm too much of a girl on the road to really get much happening and on the track you tend to know it's coming (Deer Leap at Oulton - lockstop to lockstop and back every single time) so it's easier to just relax and let it do it's thing.

Cheers Fontyyy you fill me with loads of confidence, perhaps im being a bit of a girl myself. I have tried a couple of methods with holding the bars and your right when trying to feel loose its much worse. Its probably just a setting up issue, I havent done enough miles on it yet to really try any suspension adjustents or even get a really good feel for the bike. (I wish it would just stop pissing it down and then i could use it) Once again thanks for the help all.

Did you raise the forktubes in the tripple clamps ? If so, try to go back to standard.
