MC16 Rear shock options...

Tue Mar 24, 2009 10:29 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Thought my day was going well when I secured a pretty much brand new 2005 cbr600rr rear shock but it turns out it wont fit my mc16 because of the bottom mounting. Doh!

What will fit an mc16? Mine is well soft and have tried turning the linkage round but it didnt really work, well not if I ever wanted to use the sidestand again!

Thanks
Paul

I think you'll find you want an early 90's CBR600F shock, but you'll have to do some research on which year exactly.

I think it's something like 93~95. You can get one with a remote reservoir too.

Thanks, I'll see what some sellers say tomorrow. Funnily enough I just rebuilt a cbr900 rear shock, re-oil, gas, seal etc so know my way round as long as the 600 is similar. Wonder if there is anything more modern that will fit...

What's wrong with a rebuilt 93~95ish era shock fitted to a late 80's chassis? The rest of the bike is hardly Earth shattering sophistication as we rapidly approach 2010! Confused

Of course, no reason why you couldn't pick up an old Ohlins or similar for a CBR... there must be hundreds of old fully adjustable aftermarket shocks kicking about off ex CBR racebikes out there somewhere, but I do feel it will be pretty much overkill without completely going through the rest of the bike. For example, I have an F3 shock for my MC16, but I also have an HRC swingarm, MC21 Magteks, RS250 forks, and an HRC frame! I think each part of the chassis would be wasted without the rest of it as as much as I love them, the '16 is a bit spindly!

Fair comment Andy.
I just brought a normal MC21 shock (not an SP one with a res) to go into my MC16, I figure it would be better than the old 22yr old MC16 one.

I might get it rebuilt later, if you can.

Good to know.
How does the reservoir attach? Just out of curiosity.

Yes yes I know where your coming from Andy but I was merely looking at something a bit fresher. I dont want to do a load of work to the bike only to be held up by an old shock later on down the line. I'm not expecting to bolt on a new shock and be instantly riding a razor-sharp handling bike!

Besides, the newer the shock the fresher it will be, I know I can rebuild older shocks but it takes quite a bit of time to do and its a bloody messy job Laughing

Knowing you can (and thinking you therefore had already resigned yourself to) rebuild an older shock, that's what my post was based on.

You can pick a CBR600 shock up for about £20... even if you had someone like Maxton rebuild it for £100, that's still a bloody cheap, good shock! If you can rebuild it yourself, even better!

If you subsequently go through the rest of the chassis and eventually find you are being slowed by a £20 CBR600 shock it's hardly the end of the world, and it will have at least served its purpose up until that point!

I dont disagree with what your saying Andy but I would still like to know what else fits, if nothing else does then hey ho, no loss. It would be nice to know there are other options out there too, never know how much an mc16 might benefit from having low/high speed damping adjustment Wink

Most shocks seem to be too long. The '16 and '18 has a rather short shock, and it can be a pain in the ass to find one as short, and the old CBR600 is the only one I've noticed with such a short shock.

It's OK going 10~15mm longer, but go any more and it starts to complicate things. There's probably other short shocks out there like you say, but it's nice to keep it Honda in my opinion, and to be honest I've never bothered looking for anything else like a Kawasaki or Yamaha shock. You're much more likely to get something that's a direct (or close) swap if it's Honda I think.

I'm sure there will be plenty of MC16 owners keen to hear if you find a cheap, fully adjustable alternative (from any make) though.

280mm I have measured mine at, sound about right? I'm possibly going to race it next year for a laugh so will be looking at a few alteratives!
