this weekend i bought a nsr250r it had been sitting for a fair while approx 2yrs anyway i put fuel in and some oil kicked it up and she runs but when i ride it from 2-6k is slugish 6-11 revs good gets better the higher it runs. it wont ride up my driveway which is a slight incline just stalls out no matter what. it just doesn't rev smooth even holding it at say 4000 just seems rough
1 exhaust is hot 1 is cold i thought maybe not firing but both cylinders have compression and spark pulled the plugs one is dry and not the other is wet.
i thought maybe a needle issue in the carby or something with the carbys anyone had any issues similar or any ideas that may help me nut it out
probably only firing on one cylinder .if it's been sat the carbs will need a clean out , which is pretty straight forward! and you might wanna put new spark plugs in it.
Clean everything!!! its already 21 years old!
Check eveything before you do some damage to it and it will be hell finding parts now days.
from what you are saying it sounds like one cylinder is not working! Could be fuel problem or electric ignition.
To check for ignition just take out the plug while still connected to the plug cap and kick start it. Normaly you will see a spark.
But what it sounds like is a fuel problem, if the cold plug is dry then there is a problem in that side of the carburator, you are not getting fuel in that cylinder. Everything should be ok once you clean the carburator if it is a fuel problem!
Be gental you are not going to find parts easily so dont brake anything while taking out the carb to clean. Open up the bows and clean up the jets.
If the cold plug is wet and dark then you have a fouled plug which is no good anymore. get a new one and see if it works. if it fouls again then you have to adjust your carburator.
The gas tank is mostly rusted from the age, clean it up and fit a fuel filter.
But from my experience its best to get the tank derusted by acid or something, because no fuel filter can 100% filter all the rust while your fuel is 100% contaminated with rust. _________________ feel the wind
thanks guys i have check ignition with a ignition tester, both clyinder have spark i swapped the plugs and still one hot exhaust 1 cold exhaust same exhausts tho.
i have cleaned the tank and cleaning the carbies was also in thr jobs to do but its looks mighty complicated so i might just take it to honda.
is it possible that at higher revs both cylinders are firing but at lower revs 1 cylinder is flooding???
You may not be able to get honda to look at it in brisbane.
I have called every honda shop in brisbane and they don't want anything to do with my bike.
You should have a crack at it yourself. It's not as hard as it looks.
if the ignition is good then its the fuel. Carburator off!
1st seat and gas tank off.
2nd Battery and airbox off. (you will need a long shaft screw driver for the airbox because its in a tight place to get to)
3rd unplug all the cables and pipes to the carburator (becarefull of the oil pipe it may split if you use too much force.) i find it easier to loose it on the pump end.(remember which pipe goes to which pin on the pump.)
4th release the carb screws at the junction to the manifold.
And you are done. you can leave the gass tube in place. and remember to drain the bows before you start removing the caarburator so that gas dont go everywhere down you clothes. _________________ feel the wind
Caboolture Honda were moore than willing to look at my bike, also compliance it for road worthy.. _________________ Paranoia about failure will ensure nothing but failure to ever reach potential.
yea team moto have all the parts in stock and seem to be clued on. But myself and my father who does alot of boat engines and small engines we carried out a carby balance test and the left carby was sucking way harger then the right pulled them out took of the bowls the left one was green and just gummed up to the max.
took a bit of cleaning it some wire, oxy cleaner tips, carby cleaner and alot of air and shes all clean fitted them up and boy well it flys now
thanks once again guys you have bee really helpful also when i bought it i was told it was a mc16e but there is a sticker on the left hand side of the chassis that says mc18 so now i comfused
Thats great to know! Hey the next thing you want to do is maybe have a look if the Valves are sticking with built up carbon. Make sure the 2T oil pump is working and has no air in the tubes, Use full synthetic good stuff, its easier on the pumps!!!
Its always safer to just put a little little bit of 2T in with the gas just in case.
If you are going to ride it frequently then get your hands on some parts that wear a lot such as piston rings.... or spare cylinders just in case you one day need them and can not find anyone who stocks it.
Good luck and ride safe. Oh brakes and tires you should check also!! _________________ feel the wind
The NSR250 engine series is designated MC16E, and all the cases except the HRC ones are stamped with this prefix. If you want someone to identify it for you, post a couple of pictures or links to pictures hosted online somewhere. If your bike is a 1989 model then it will be an MC18 R5K, or R6K if it's an SP. _________________ Andy.

I would go to a dirt bike mechanic before using honda in Brisbane (or Pine Rivers). At least they may have seen a two stroke before.

Luckily Noyse Honda at Brendale shut down, they were swallowed up by the GFC.. Strange how a big business folds in these so called 'times' (although it did not hit Aus that hard), yet small bike shops in the same area continue.. Probably due to the fact they were all wankers who worked there, i found it so hard to get assistance/help/answers on a number of occasions..
Back on topic..
Glad to hear you got your bike sorted.. _________________ Paranoia about failure will ensure nothing but failure to ever reach potential.
