New engines sure would be nice!

Couple years ago I bought an SL70 with a tired engine. The bike was in ok shape and could have been restored but I wanted a rider. It's kickstart shaft was partially broken so I checked into a new shaft and associated parts to fix. The combined cost was more than a brand new Chinese copy engine with (supposedly) 125cc's!!! I bought the "Lifan" engine on Ebay and it arrived with kickstart arm, shift lever, carb neck, carb, mini harness, and even oil in the crankcase! There were no instructions but I managed to get it wired to run. The engine is a BEAST and runs circles around my dad's XL70. It either does have a much larger displacement or better carb/cam/jetting/???something??? because it's a blast to ride.

Now, why couldn't we get Lifan to copy the NSR engine? Or at least the barrels so we have spares!

What's wrong with simply having worn or damaged cyls re-plated?

You still can buy new cylinders.

Even then I would rather buy used ones and have them replated by Electrosil in Melbourne (apparently they are good at what they do).

I have found that all parts that wear beyond repair can be bought quite cheap.
E.g. pistons, gaskets, cables, clutch plates etc. All other parts just take a little time and care to bring them back to operational specs.

In the US, there are NO spares. Everything is either at Charles' place, or not here at all. Shipping is very expensive, and not all sellers may disclose just how badly exploded the barrels are so buying used is always risky. The only set I've felt comfortable buying were from Tyga and we all know how expensive shipping from Thailand can be. The truth is I really haven't found any advertised for sale except maybe 3 cylinders total in almost a year. I don't check Yahoo Japan because it's very frustrating for an impatient person like me (haven't completely figured out the translation stuff).

And like Max said, buying new is just nice sometimes. It would be great to have another option. I looked at MoriwakiMan's deal and think it's great. Nothing, but nothing is better than original Honda parts. What I'm thinking about would be much cheaper for a whole engine but I will be the first to admit that the lifespan/reliability just wouldn't approach "Honda-like". I'd take the trade off though to be able to wring the hell out of the racebike and just replace the barrels when it went boom, provided they had Chinese pricing of course. I just can't afford the price of the NOS Honda stuff to have a lot of spares sitting around which may or may not ever be needed.

When I seized my top cylinder it was a mess. The piston chewed right through the nikasil and cracked basically every port. I had them both repaired in brisbane and the bike is like new (with a few mods).

Electrosil are way better with repairs and even have people buy new cylinders then have the nikasil stripped then replated with electrosil. So that says it all for me.

And I don't believe having spare cylinders makes a difference if your bike is jetted properly as it shouldn't fail at all, only wear with time as all parts do.

If people feel comfortable with no spares that's fine. You'll just have to sell your bike when it does break or pay out the nose for OEM/good used. I have no problem if you don't agree spares are nice to have I'd just like to be able to fix my bike over the weekend if something breaks like Fontyyy said.

My cylinders were repaired by AURUM PLATING in narangba. They take a while but they are cheap.

As for "spinning a ring" is that a common problem when your rings are gapped correctly? Or is it a problem when the rings are worn? I just feel it would be hard to do with fresh correctly gapped rings.

Andy

P.s. If you have the money I would be going through "electrosil" as they are better than Aurum just twice the price.

Sweet, Another brizzy boy.

We should all get together for a ride if this rain ever stops.

80XER lives just around the corner from where I work. I've been meaning to see if he want to ride down to the Horizon Alliance office on saturdays for a g'day and all the rest.
