Just in case you couldn't sleep without knowing what was inside...
I got this knowing that it only did half the derestriction, but with the matching ends for the TPS it'll be easy as pie to do that mod and allow the bike to return to stock if anyone ever wanted to do that for some odd reason. I'd hoped it was possible to cut it open and remove the wires, do the splicing, and then pack it back in, but the black filler material was just too frustrating to work with so out came the hammer (hey Matt can I have a job? ).
Now you know. _________________ Craig

That's why I took it apart. But nobody had posted pictures yet, and we all love them, right?! To me nothing is true until I see a pic. After all, that's how I know Bigfoot and Nessie are real!
A fool and his money are easily parted (look at the price of 28's). You'll have no problem selling it Tom. _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...
Ok, so many of you are now at the very least amateur mechanics. Partly through desire and partly through necessity. However, there's still a whole bunch of people who will forever struggle to remove a set of spark plugs (my big brother for example), and these are the guys that will buy a box. The thought of stripping a harness cover is enough to give some folk nightmares, let along snip a wire on a bike that should never have reached their shores and that you're average bike shop wouldn't go near.
As for the MC28:
As much as MC28's are universally disliked among many members of this forum, I'd just like to say that all you 28 owners should take your heads out of the oven as there is light at the end of the tunnel. You can relish in the fact that even though you may never beat an MC21 (or MC18 ) in a truly equal showdown, you will get a load more dosh in your pocket if you choose to sell it.
Of course derestrictor boxes will always sell, I'm a final year electrical engineering student, and if I had a 21, I'd use one! I saw one sell here in NZ recently for about $40. Why would I bother stripping and soldering wires when I could pay $40 and have a nice and tidy solution like that.
Yep, I plan on removing the M-Max that's on the bike now and install this after I do the splicing. That way the uncut harness will remain uncut, and the bike will be completely derestricted instead of only halfway. Then I'll do the same thing to the M-Max box and either keep it for a spare or sell it to somebody that wants to do the same thing. Although I agree that it's funny to think that someone would ever want a restricted bike, I too hate even consider cutting and soldering on a 20 year old bike as rare as any NSR is, let alone the few SP's that are still stock. No reason to do those mods when the derestrictor boxes are so cheap and easy to install. I think I gave Dan $5 for this one if I remember correctly, and it was certainly worth $5 to me to preserve the original harness.

But do remember, the only time when no cutting and splicing of the wiring loom is required is with a HRC race wiring loom AND HRC derestrictor box.
If a HRC box is installed with a Road loom, then all the multi-connector wires have to be spliced into the loom, which is actually a bigger job than the manual derestriction wire splice!!!
So, if you have a road loom and want to derestrict, splicing is unavoidable, just a question of how much.

Those three magical letters... and "NOT FOR HIGHWAY USE" just make all the difference though! Who'd not want that if the option's available to them?! _________________ Andy.

Now hold on. I thought we only needed to get 12V into the PGM, and do the GPS splice. You're saying that the loom on my SP with the HRC box spliced in will always be better than the loom on my SE with the 2 wire splices?
Now I'm confused because I thought I read that the HRC box does those 2 splices and nothing else. ??
The HRC box does not do the GPS splice, in fact there is no reason to do the GPS splice at all.
The GPS splice gives no extra power, infact on the 21's I do I disconnect the GPS plug all together just running the one wire required for the neutral light. _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...
