Quick turn throttle

Thu Jun 17, 2010 3:50 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hey,

Just wondering if anyone knows of a throttle / twist grip / housing that can be used on an NSR to make it turn quicker / have a shorter throw for track use? Has anyone done this before? Im hoping something off another Honda might do the trick so the cable fittings / thread sizes etc are the same.

Thanks

Jamie Wheeler who runs 'jamies NSR homepage' can supply Kiss quick action throttles for NSRs. His contact details and pictures of the parts he can get for you are on his website (which is in the links section on the left of your screen there). I've got one on mine but it didn't reduce the action as much as i thought it would. It is quicker than standard though.

I had a quick action throttle on my Garelli Tiger Cross when i was 16 and that really had a very short throw - couldn't have been much more than 1/4 turn. I had hoped the Kiss throttle would make the NSRs throw that short but alas, nah.

The Kiss throttle eliminates the second cable that closes the carb slides and cannot be used if you are running the two stroke oil pump still. So its only any good for race/road bikes running premix.

A happy bonus is that it weighs a fair bit less than the standard set up and by eliminating the second throttle cable, it gives you one less thing to disconnect when you take the carbs off. Also the throttle 'snaps' shut quicker because of the reduced drag once the second cable is gone.

Single cable throttles have always concerned me, that second cable on a normal throttle closes it again. Which is nice in the event of the first cable snagging, stuck open throttles have caused a couple of nasty crashes at Hall Bends (Cadwell Park).
I think I'll stick with the stock mech.

Would the Domino quick turns on the Allen's performance page be a goer?

I havn't pulled an NSR throttle housing apart, but on Minimoto's you could cut a small wedge and put that in the throttle housing to reduce the action of the throttle.

From the sums I did Ive worked out that a throttle hub thats big enough to make a difference wont fit inside the original housing - so Im thinking it will be a complete change over.

Why do you say you cant run the oil pump if your only running a single pull cable throttle? I know of two bikes that only run one cable and still have their oil pump running...

Stock throw is close to 1/4, you can either buy a throttle tube with a larger cable roller diameter, or DIY and cut down a cable tie tongue and glue that onto the thing.

As I said - spacing out the original inner makes stuff all difference - to go from 1/4 to something worth the effort like 1/6 it wont fit in the OE housing...

I thought i remembered reading something, maybe on Jamie's site that warned that you couldn't use it and keep the oil pump - i could be on crack though.

I agree with Fontyyy's comments regarding the second cable positively closing the throttles thereby preventing a potential catastrophy. I'm abit worried about it too to be honest. Presumably Honda saw fit to put a closing cable in there for a good reason!
