Cylinder head studs

Tue Nov 23, 2010 8:25 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

I have had a bit of an issue with one of the cylinder head studs. It kept coming "loose" I have just figured out it has actually been pulling through the ali threads (no I haven't been overtightened it).

The stud was in so the shorter threaded bit was in the cylinder. Is that the corret way, i would have thought the longer threaded bit should have been in cylinder and the shorter bit in the nut.

Anyway now to fix it! Anyone have any ideas? I was thinking of drilling it out and using a heli-coil. Is ther a better way of doing it? there has been a bit of coolant leaking should I change the head gasket too?

Cheer
Mike

I've welded them up before and re-cut the thread but if the rest of the barrel isn't too bad I would try a time-sert.

The head gasket must be replaced every time the head is removed.

Its only a single stud that this has happened to. Its the one closest to the exhaust port so guess it just fatigued.

What os the difference between time-sert and helicoil. I already have a helicoil kit so was hoping to get away with that.

I havent take the head off and figured I could retap and coil it with the head on. But fluid has leaked between the gasket and head so guess I should replace it. They are just difficult and expensive to get in NZ.

your helicoil kit is for fixin stuff all the time, whereas the threadcert, or time cert Question is like the bob the builder replacement.

the helicoil tap will be near impossible to get without buying a kit, whereas the threadcert uses a standard size tap

Got it all done. Used the Helicoil and it worked no worries. Turned the stud over so the longer threaded bit was going into the cylinder so its got more thread to bite on.
