To thermostat or not to termostat? Is this a real question?

Hi all

This may have an obvious answer to some of you, but my engine has no thermostat and I do not know what to do.

Without the thermostat, my engine will not run above 60ºC. Is this an issue? I always allow it to reach this temp before hitting the throttle hard, but someone recently wrote on this site about the NSR being a 80ºC engine, and that made me ask myself...

On the other hand, the thermostat will create some pressure drop in the system which will make it slightly less efficient. And it is a potential failure point, although being a stock part, this should not be an issue.

So, What do you guys run? With or without thermostat?

Thanks

Road bike = Thermostat

Race bike = No thermostat

If you want to use the bike on the road without a thermostat then you are going to have to take a roll of duct tape with you to put some strips on the radiator if the bike doesnt reach operating temp.

You dont want to wack the bike under 60, this may lead to a cold seizure. Anything above 70 then you start to loose HP.

So for the NSR you are trying to have the temp at around 65 for optimum performance.

Cheers
Mario

Experiment with duct tape on the rad, till you reach your desired temp, then you wont have to worry about not having a thermostat. I personally dont run one.

Agree wholeheartedly..road use = thermostat.
Much faster warm-up = less wear and up to full power quicker (expansion/compression etc).

If you look at the temp guage of any pre ypvs LC 250/350 there is a little mark on the dial. As standard the needle almost never reaches this mark. What was/is it for? Fit an aftermarket thermostat and watch the needle flip up quickly to this mark. I did this mod to my LC (thanks for the advice Stan) and it made a world of difference. It seemed obvious to me that this mark was the optimal operating temperature for the engines.
Sorry, off topic slightly. Smile

Mike
p.s. Always do a check on the opening temperature on the thermostat before (and if) you fit it. You'll need a decent thermometer though.

Thanks for the replies.

So it is clear that I need a thermostat for road running, although I'll test the duct tape trick first. Let's see if I can manage to keep it at +/-65ºC
