MC28 Issue with gas leak

Sun Jul 15, 2012 4:35 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hello all, newbie here and just would like to say that this is such a great forum!

With that being said I have a question and would like to find out if any of you experts here can shed a light for me.

I just recently obtain an MC28, everything was well and this is the third week that I had it. When I picked the bike, everything was well.
During the second week, I went and fill it up with a full tank of gas, then it started to leak when I got home (this was coming from the hose behind the carbs). At that time, my impression was that I have somehow left the choke on during my ride, therefore flooding it with gas.

After a couple of days passed, the leak stops and started the bike just fine, for few days everything ran smoothly start - ride, perfect.
I also checked gear oil level, and it doesn't have any issues with gas/ overflowing.

Entering my third week, I fill the bike again with gas, then when I came home, I found the same symptoms. Gas was leaking, bike is able to start though. But I also noticed that the leak stops when the bike is running (idle) and continues to drip when the bike is turned off. Shutting the petcock on and off does nothing. This is when I realized that it might be leaking only when I put new gas in.

I have ordered new carb rebuild kit (not here yet), in which someone will help me out (since I am new at 2 stroker) and I am learning how to properly maintain the bike. But I was thinking that the issue might not be with the carburetor anyway, since the leak was very clean gas, and it is so far has been leaking about 1.5 gallons or so (while float bowls have smaller size).

I was wondering if there are other things that I should check, or if any of you have experienced something like this.

Any help is greatly appreciated and I do apologize for the noob questions.

Thanks guys!

Hi , it sounds like the needle and seat are not shutting off properly and the bowls are overflowing . Service the carbs and it should solve your iissues . Remove the fuel pipe from your petcock and check if fuel is still dripping from it in the off position , it too may not be shutting off and will need to be replaced .

Thanks for the input, I will check the carbs once the rebuild kit is here.

I was thinking you may just be brimming the tank when you fill up.
I assume it's quite hot where you are. It may just be the fuel in the full tank is expanding and escaping from the fuel cap breather.
There is a drain tube from the filler neck through the tank that drips into a catch tray on the airbox. This tray has a tube that runs down to the bottom of the bike.

It's just a theory. It might just be as simple as this, meaning you can save having to strip the carbs, etc.
If you are brimming the tank, try just filling to the lower part of the filler neck inside the tank.
Also, I always turn the fuel tap to the off position when I park the bike up.

Hi bandicoot58
How much qty did you order?
As 1 piece is for one carb,so for a carbs rebuilt you will need 2 pieces.
I am asking as i did this mistake to order 1 rebuilt kit some years before Rolling Eyes

regards
Stefanos

If 1.5 gallons has leaked out, then it's probably not what I thought.

More like Neal says, leaking fuel tap & float valves. Or, you've left the fuel tap on & the carb float valves are leaking.

The part where it only occurs after you fill up got me thinking of my reasoning.

Mind you, American gallons are weedy small ones compared to our big English ones! It's about the only thing in America that isn't bigger!
Although, I've just thought, your "pints" of beer are weedy small ones too!

It's about 6 Liters more less, It finally stopped leaking today. Again, tested starting and running fine... I will wait for the kit to arrive and service the carbs to start.

Thanks.
