Having seized my NSR at the weekend due to a dodgy hose-clip (lost all its coolant, was pissing it down so didn't notice the damp foot), I started the strip down as I'm racing it next weekend. Found the front cylinder had copped it this time, one that was replated a year or so back. Typical.
It looks as if the plating has 'peeled' off about 40% of the ring travel area during the seizure, at the usual places (front and rear of piston) but also a load has come off one side above the transfer ports. Bugger. It wasn't a huge seize, was slowing for a bend when I felt the motor tighten and just got the clutch pulled in time, was hoping to be able to clean the plating up but without some amazing glue it'll be another replate I guess!
Now this is the 2nd one that's seized this year, the first was due to a small end bearing breaking up, and besides the gouges from the bearing material squashing between piston & bore, it had also removed a lot of plating from the opposite side of the damage.
Both cylinders have been done at the same place, at different times, but I'm wondering if the process isn't quite as good as it should be.
I've not spoken to the company in question, I may drop them an email though.
In the 4 years of racing an RGV, and its many, many, many seizures, I never witnessed damage like this, even on replated cylinders.
Anyone else seen the plating come off in flakes? _________________ More **** two strokes than you can shake a **** stick at.
I've never personally experienced this, but it's not the first time I've heard of it. However, it's not only limited to NSR's. I've heard of this happening to other makes too.
I don't think it's common though. I know of bikes running plated barrels for years, and it's very common to see 75hp+ RS's and TZ's happily running replated barrels.
However, I don't think any aftermarket plater is going to match the OEM quality. OEM will be expected to last tens of thousands of miles or more, whereas most aftermarket replaters will probably give you little more than a 3 month warranty [against defective workmanship]. _________________ Andy.

£140 ish a time.. I know it's never going to be OEM quality but still pissed that a small seizure is enough to trash it. May try another place next time.. _________________ More **** two strokes than you can shake a **** stick at.
I've seen stock barrels wrecked for the want of a 50p circlip, and ones that have survived what you'd expect to be almost catastrophic piston failure with little more than some wet'n'dry and soapy water! _________________ Andy.

I used Langcourts for my barrels. I have not ever used them but the owner bought a hifi system from em several years ago and I had a look around his works near Weston Super Mare. The work looked good but time will tell.
I paid around £200 for both barrels and return postage.

Langcourts are who I tend to use, but not sure if mine have been done by the YTS guy on a Friday afternoon or something.. _________________ More **** two strokes than you can shake a **** stick at.
I've had Langcourts plating fail a number of times. Large section just pealing off.
I can't say Aptec are any better though. The last cylinder I got from them wasn't even round!
I'd rather just look for good second hand OE barrel. Having said that some of the NSR500V barrels need replating, these are going over to Aprilia to be done but cost a little more than Langcourts or Aptec but I'm told the standard is superb. _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...
How much dearer are Aprilia? I don't mind paying for something that's going to last. And running out of original cylinders to buy now _________________ More **** two strokes than you can shake a **** stick at.
Aprilia is £600 per barrel, £80 for a det ring and £50 for any welding required. They do however come back as new and are done to the same standard as the Aprilia GP bikes (done by the same guys in the factory).
Not really an option on a NSR250 barrel I guess but more like it when your barrels £3000 new. _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...
Or keep finding new barrels, although I'm sure Martin will get sick of tuning them at some point! _________________ More **** two strokes than you can shake a **** stick at.
Suppose so, but going for the cheaper option on pistons now, see how they fare...! _________________ More **** two strokes than you can shake a **** stick at.
I'll see, I have so far got through a fair few of the Honda ones, I don't mind replacing £40 pistons more often! _________________ More **** two strokes than you can shake a **** stick at.
