I am coming to the end of a large jigsaw puzzle that was an nsr250 in boxes and have now got something that resembles the original bike, but unfortunately I cAnt get it to start!
I have fuel, I have compression and I have a spark, but it doesnt want to go at all.
Is it possible to get the ignition timing that far out or something similar? Is there anything in terms of spark timing I may have missed or got wrong?
Any help would be greatly appreciated - I would reallly like to see this bike run again..
Carbs have been stripped and rebuilt, choke appears to be working ok.
Is it possible to get the coil leads (or the coils) the wrong way round? I had assumed that the coil with the shorter lead went on the lower pot, and the cable positions in the loom dictated which was which as I couldn't see how you could stretch the upper leads onto the lower coil. Is that not correct?
Do the plugs come out wet after you've tried starting it a bunch of times?
Have you tried to bump start it?
Is the battery voltage good? _________________ MC21SP Plaything

I have a spark so I assume the kill switch must be correct. Battery is brand new and the Plugs are wet after I have tried to kick it over but I havent tried to bump it yet as I am using a temp tank hanging from the ceiling and the chain isnt on yet.
Sounds like it is all ok and it should start then - just doesnt want to.
Pull the plugs and heat then up with a blow torch to burn off any fuel/oil and put them back in while still warm. Kick it over and do not touch the throttle. You may need a good 50 kicks to sstart it up, but do not be tempted to touch the throttle.

Your showing your age now Harry, I havnt heard that one for a long time, the other 'old' alternative was to rub a lead pencil on the end of the plug, dont laugh everybody these methods work, well they used to. _________________ Proud Father of , 05 ktm 400exc supermoto 2018 honda crf rx supermoto

Indeed, sometimes in my experience they do just go first kick or two, sometimes they can need a good bump start.
This is where being 6ft tall and big/heavy enough to paddle the bike along in gear helps.
Also make sure the battery is fully charged. _________________ Please do not PM me technical questions, if you can't find it on the Forum start a thread

Still do that now _________________ More **** two strokes than you can shake a **** stick at.
The heating of the plugs always seems to work for me. We used to do it on my mum's Hillman Imp when it was flooded. When I rebuilt my NSR, I had the same problem. Got a bit trigger happy on the throttle, soaked the plugs and no joy. Pulled them out, heat with a small blow torch (only until hot, not red or anything) and replace. Went about 3 or 4 kicks later.
