After picking up the bike last week I have decided to get straight on with a rebuild/refresh.
The bike is in pretty good condition for the age it has a few marks and scratches on the body work but no cracks or breaks at 5 yards it looks very good it is only when you get up close you can see the age of the bike so it will have a new paint job in the same colours. The wheels are good but again could do with new paint the chassis is what you would expect from a 24 year old bike it is all there and in reasonable condition all bits will be cleaned and either powder coated or plated.
The engine looks clean but as with the rest of the bike is showing its age all the internal plastics (air box etc) are good.
I plan to take the engine out give it a good clean and try out my new soda cleaning set-up while it is apart I will have all the major parts inspected and replaced if needed ...
I will keep this updated as a progress please feel free to add any advice or help it is allways welcome
Went for my first NSR ride today down to the painters they can save the original paint which is good as it is not that bad ...
What a fantastic little motorcycle why did I not buy one of these years ago
Even on a 24 year shock and square rear tyre it still handles better than the RGV and that engine its like a 2 stroke 4 stroke it has real mid range, the riding position is almost confortable as well ...
The engine seems to be running a lot better still lumpy around 3k but after this it pulls cleanly to 7 or 8k I did not take it past this will go gentle until I feel confident ...
Sod the cost this is what a motorcyle should be like
Looks great to start with, as mentioned, always liked this colour scheme, subtle and stylish haven't even been out on mine since I bought it. quite looking forward to it now as also have something to compare it too.
I've seen year old bikes look worse than that, what year is it as the colour scheme is unfamiliar and what's its history.
I have a pentax colour scheme, original, it would pass for a well kept one year old bike, the most frustrating thing is I don't have a workshop or garage, come winter it goes into a storage facility, a bit expensive.
Your renovation will be of interest as I will have to do some to mine before too long so hope to get a garage.
Dux, it is a 1990/1 bike NSR250R the bike was brought over by West Coast imports a couple of years back they have had it in a dry storage/showroom I looked at it last year and was tempted but put of by the price a year on the bike is still there at the same price with the price of NSR's these days it seemed reasonable ... Its done around 10k miles and is all original does not look to have been molestered in anyway which is good ...
It does look nice in the pictures and in the flesh but it is showing its 24 years not in a bad way ...
Good news from the painters I can keep the original paint they painters will repair rather than a complete respray the paint is good its just let down by small rough areas and a bit of very light damage ...
I did enjoy riding it today ... the poor old RGV will never get used
Magic ! it is a sound investment as well, I bought mine last year and only heard it running so what its like on the inside is anybody's guess, it has been looked after and was part of a collection so fingers crossed, for a 250 it goes really well, the condition meant it was a bit dear it has done about 16,000 km.
As soon as the sun is out I can't wait to get on it.

For heaven's sake, don't ride a tuned one then!
Red trace is a 1991 MC21R with a set of carbon cans and the airbox modified (basically, our standard "delimiting").
Blue trace is our SP tune.
Green is a standard RGV250M, although it had done reasonable mileage.
While it may not be fair to say all RGVs are like that (although most we've tested are!), it is fair to say almost all stock NSRs are as good as that! As you can see, peak power isn't much different, and most wouldn't even feel the 2hp the NSR has over the RGV, but look at the area between the two graphs, and particularly between 7000~9000rpm. This is what you've just experienced, and also why the RGVs "feel" quick, because you tend to get that crude rush after the even cruder powervalves open. _________________ Andy.

I agree with the above Andy riding the bikes back to back the Honda feels so much more refined the RGV has recon shock and forks for all the work a new engine the honda has a shock with 24 year old oil and a 10k mile engine yet the honda stands above the RGV ...
Still love the little RGV for all its faults it still brings a smile to my face ... its just the Honda deos it all better ...
The MC21 is a great chassis, no question about it. The suspension can be a bit soft in standard trim though, and like you say, probably past its best after 24 years too!
The power delivery from the NSR motor makes it feel deceptively slow though, and can exaggerate tired suspension, because you don't often realise just how fast you're going when you start to tie it up in knots! _________________ Andy.

I updated my suspension to a full Maxton kit, as the std none adjustable suspension was way past it's best. Personally I went suspension, brakes, engine in my refurbish, although so far the motor has eaten 2 pistons, 1 head, 1 barrel and 1 crank (all genuine Honda bits no pattern stuff) in less than a 1000 miles of ownership !!! anyway that' all sorted now.
Maxton had my bike in over the winter a few years ago. The difference in ride quality is now on a par if not better than my well fettled Aprilia MK2. The VJ22 is always going to be poor in comparison to both std NSR and Aprilia RS, without some sort of mods. Maybe compare an SP spec RGV and certainly a VJ21 or VJ23 might be getting a bit closer to an NSR. Either way any upgrade to the old and tired NSR suspension will be worthwhile. Send me a PM if you need any info.

Nice graphs. Have you got a like for like comparison,
e.g. std high mileaged NSR ~v~ std high mielage RGV
derestricted RGV (ie with the 23d70... Aprilia ignition box) ~v~ delimited NSR
or tuned ~v~ tuned ?
I love all my bikes, NSR, RGV, RS Aprilia, 3XV and RG5 so it's not a BHP war just curious if you have that comparison
