In all honesty, I think the NSR is one of the best bikes made with a fantastic power-to-weight ratio, great handling, and unique styling not many other bikes have. The performance is quite close to the real thing the GP guys had. However, I have one question I gripe over....
Since Yamaha had the RD/RZ 500 and Suzuki the RGV Gamma 500, is the 400 the only large displacement 2 banger honda sold to the public? Not only that, the 400 was made so long ago!
I'm thinking this bike will have trouble keeping up with the bikes of today (stateside that is) even with upgrades pushing it to 70+ with overbore kits, custom piping and a goldmine of parts to add on. I've seen a custom australian made kit for the RGV 250 that provides custom brackets to bolt the 500 Gamma engine to the 250 frame (granted finding the engine will be difficult) and looks tempting to do for other bikes.
Has anyone done engine swaps to these bikes of this kind? If so, where do you find engines, bits, and performance upgrades? _________________ Party hardy all night long till the sun comes up and the cows come home. Yeow!
A few people have tried, but nothing ever easily done turned up such that we all wanted to do it.
The best option at the minute is the Tyga 300cc kit, which will give you 75hp with no reliability issues. It's also the same weight as the NSR, which is where just about any other engine will loose out.
The modern 600's are very compact and light, but are still heaps of pig iron compared to the two stroke, simply because of the extra parts involved in a 4 stroke engine.
How big did you want to go? Maybe you'd be better with an FZR400 frame fitted with the 1000cc engine? _________________ MC21SP Plaything

Even a decent RG[V] 500 will be wasted by a 600RR.
Sorry but the world has moved on.
My 500 NSR will be lovely, but I'm not kidding myself about how well it will perform relative to the RR.
It doesn't matter tho, coz you'll still be on a stroker - so don't be put off.
Just be realistic about your expectations. _________________

Yup. With the 600's making 100hp, you need to be making 90plus to be in the same league, and can our little chassis really handle that? Our tyres, chains and brains? _________________ MC21SP Plaything

My 2000 RS250 I had (~90 rwhp/ 225lbs) had enough guts to keep up with all the bikes I rode with on my Motegi trackday, except the 1000 inline 4's. It was all I could do to stay with the current crop of 600's, but not even think about out-pulling them.
The NSR or any other street-designed 250 really has no chance at all in a straight line... _________________ Paul Herr

I built a project bike - an RGV250 with an NS400 engine bored out to 500. Unfortunately it died before completion after two of the barrels got damaged by a courier.
I was comparing the 400's ability to hang with some 750's if worked up (somewhere around 100 HP if built right) and maybe fit that sucker, but parts would be scarce and aftermarket is almost non-existant. If there was only a way to do this right...... _________________ Party hardy all night long till the sun comes up and the cows come home. Yeow!

It's true, pole postition in the Supersport qualifying at Doningotn today (this is a 600cc 4 stroke road bike on road tyres) would qualify in 19th place for the 2001 500gp.
Even the R6 cup guys (these are standard R6's with a can on) are running sub 1.40
Looking at the superbikes and Lavilla and Haslam both ran faster today than any 500 ever did and don't even think of saying anything about tyres as neither of them beat Steve Hislop's 2002 qualifying record time. _________________ Please do not PM me technical questions, if you can't find it on the Forum start a thread
As for getting a 400 to 100bhp so far they are at around 80 for a cheating bored out fast race bike.
Yes an RR is faster with the right rider, I have passed the odd one on trackdays. Not to mention a couple of 1000's. I am not kidding myself thought these guys were just on the wrong bike for them.
If I got a 600RR I doubt I'd be much fatser anywhere except a straight line, I know my limits (low)
Nice coop with the (Can't)Ride magazine, by the way.
I'm not championing the RR here - ANY modern 600 will kill ya.
I'm certain you'd be quicker on say, a Gixxer too Sean. I found that the good riding habits you learn on a stroker let you really get the most out of a 600.
As i said - go right ahead. My own 400/500 hybrid will be ready in the spring - just be realistic about how much stock roadbikes have improved in the last 5 years, let alone 25. There has never been so much ACCESSIBLE performance available to Joe average rider. _________________

Stock, they claim to be 72 HP. 80 isn't much of a jump. I haven't seen engine diagrams, but what about ported + polished transfer ports, 100+ octane, hotter plugs, reduced friction rings and bearings and RPM's above 14K?
I'd like to think of options other then trying to shoot a 25 HP shot of nitrous into the engine..... _________________ Party hardy all night long till the sun comes up and the cows come home. Yeow!

Amazing what a bit of new macadam will do.
Not really, Steve Hislop's 1.31.457 was set (see note) in 2002 on a 2001 spec Ducati and still stands as the fastest non MotoGP lap time ever. If i remember rightly Edwards also broke the 500gp record on the SP2.
rgvsean wrote:Interesting, are they using the full circuit?
Oh yes, current MotoGP record (also see note) is 1.27.897
Note; not official lap records as both are qualifying not race times. _________________ Please do not PM me technical questions, if you can't find it on the Forum start a thread
