Differences between mc18 and mc21 front wheels?

Tue Feb 23, 2010 1:59 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

I'm trying to get the front end all lined up, but am having issues with the front wheel (mc18 magtek) where the wheel is off to one side, its a bit hard to see but these pics show what I'm on about:

Between the rotor button and fork leg there is about 4mm gap

and on the right hand side

about half a mm gap

Whereas the wet wheel, which is an mc21 rim is pretty much central with around 2mm of gap between the disk button and fork leg.

On the magtek there is 15mm(r/h) and 4mm(l/h) distance from the bearing face to the disk outer face, and 13mm (r/h) and 6mm (l/h) on the mc21 wheel.

So are the spacers between the two models different sizes or is there something more sinister going on? The dust seals dont seem to fit right and all bearings are sat in their correct seats.

Any help would be great..

Paul

I'd say you've just got the spacers or the wheel in the wrong way round.

NSR Magtek and stock spacers are the same. I bought a 3" Magtek once that was supposedly from an (NF5) RS and was told I'd need different spacers. Either it wasn't from an RS or the infomation I was given about the different spacers was incorrect because it fitted fine.

Hi Fonty, no not got the wheel in the wrong way round sorry Laughing

And the spacers the other way round will push the wheel even further to the right. The only other thing I can do is to make some new spacers for the mc18 wheel.

I'm still wondering if the mc21 spacers are different to the mc18 items. That would make sense that I have some of the former..

A slightly different set up on my MC21 Track Bike (RVF forks), but purely as an example......when I bought an NF5 Magtek 3" Front Rim, it required a spacer machining to line up the wheel correctly.

But your rim almost looks too wide for the forks, with not enough clearance on either side, even if the wheel was centred??

Its ok Rich, with the mc21 rim when its central. Brakes seem to fit ok too. Just the mc18 one is off centre.

Looking at my nc30 its similar setup, with the buttons running close to the fork leg. I guess yours looks to have more space due to the stanchion being in place of where my leg is?

The mc18 & 21 front wheels are the same, I think the difference must be in the spacers i.e. if you have mc 18 forks you need to use mc18 spacers.
I have an mc18 front magtek in my 21 and it was a straight swap, although I have nc35 forks Shocked But the point is their was no difference in the fitment of the wheel when I changed from the 21 to 18 front.

Wierd, there is definetely a difference between mine, I'm just going to have to make some spacers up to suit I guess..

I even stripped the bearings out of the wheels to make sure it was in order and they seem good.

Cheers

Some setups certainly do require different spacers. My NF5 RWU front-end uses 2x narrow spacers if I recall correctly, but my NF5 USD front-end uses 1x narrow and 1x wide. The Magteks were a direct fit, but still require different spacers for the different front-ends.

All the spacers I initially used were OEM NSR, although I now have custom alloy ones front and rear.

I think if you look at the R2/4J it uses 2x narrow spacers (although it was some 3 years ago or more when I had the RWU front-end fitted, so I may be mistaken), whereas the R5/6K and MC21/28 use 1x narrow and 1x wide.
