when i have a look at the plugs after just idling it is very rich and wet.
i ran it at around 10,000 and had a look at the plugs. was not bad...but still quite rich..but not wet anymore.
i am going to a track day in 4 days...would running way too rich do anything more than not run as good as it should? can it actually do any damage?
Don't worry, running rich won't bother it. Even if the weather is cold and wet on your track day you will probably still be nice and safe with your jetting. The worst that can happen (in my experience) is that the weather will be even hotter than when you last examined the plugs and you will lose some horsepower. I've jetted so rich (because i didn't know any better) that the bike wouldn't run on full throttle in fourth gear or higher (the bike was an MZ250 racer). This fouls the plugs eventually, but that isn't the end of the world. I always jet a little on the rich side to avoid engine damage.
I'd be happy with your jetting for a trackday _________________ After years of moaning about immigrants now i am one...
It's safe to be rich. In life and two strokes! _________________ MC21SP Plaything

Dont go over the top with jetting, we had a rather in depth debate about this a while ago. StephenRC45 was having trouble with seizures on his 300 kit, my thoughts were too large main jets. You could make the oil to fuel mix weak by increasing the mains too much, that is if you are still using the injector mix system. Another theory is "washing" the oil from the cylinder walls by dumping in too much fuel. _________________ NSR250R MC21 (NEARLY SOLD!!)

Santa, please bring me a NSR500 and a SP-2 next year. Pleeeeease....
We found the reason for the 300 probs and its being worked on to cure it. I was also running pre mix so it was for sure getting enough oil lol.
Like nsrbelfast says though too much fuel will wash bores (and bearings) if youre still using a oil pump. _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...
Thats the one Stephen, couldnt remember all the details!
So biatchy, BE CAREFUL!!!! _________________ NSR250R MC21 (NEARLY SOLD!!)

At least you dont need to find out the hard way biatch!
What was the prob with the 300 Stephen? _________________ NSR250R MC21 (NEARLY SOLD!!)

man! i am in a rush...track day in 3 days! and it wont run!
my bike was workin ok(one cylinder was not igniting as good)
both plugs very very rich etc...but the bike ran ok....did not conk out or anythin
then today...started it up..and went for a short ride. went ok(feels like power down tho).once i get to a light and stop, then start to go..bottom cylinder dies. then eventually the other one too..went home and cleaned the very carbon covered plugs..fired up. short ride..same thing again. seems like the biek is ok if you keep it revvin higher than say 6000.
i dunno where to look...i took the old air filter off cos it was shagged and maybe thought it was restricting air.but no..same thing
are my float needle stuffed? flooding? whats a good way to test the float needle?
biatchy wrote:oh yeah...and at about 12,000 it loses pwoer and goes quite flat...
That would be normal on a two stroke...
Was it working fine to begin with, ie you haven't mucked about with it before it started going wrong?
I'm wondering if the PGM is playing up... _________________ MC21SP Plaything

no i havent really mucked around with jetting etc or anything..
all is as i got it...when i did take the carbs out before for cleaning tho i did notice that the two main jets were different size.cant remeber what sizes but they definetly had different numbers
the bike was running quite good the last few times...was rich but ran good...now today this happened..
i dont exactly want to go rush out and buy float needles etc because they cost quite a bit...if i pour fuel into the fuel line to the carbs and let the float chamber fill, will i be able to tell if it is all sealing good?
PGM could be messin up dave? shite....
this bike has been draining me...but i have learnt a hell of a lot in the process... _________________ Philip Ahn

It's normal to run different sizes, as the top tends to run hotter than the lower, and the lower has a poorer burn due to the offset spark plug.
Does it smell of petrol? You would be able to see any external leaks, or if the carbs were overflowing due to a blocked shut off valve, so I wouldn't think it's that.
What colour are the sparks? Bright blue or yellow? _________________ MC21SP Plaything

smell of petrol i dont think so.
there isnt any fuel on the floor or anythin once i get it home to my garage or while i let it warm up in my garage.
i havent really checked once the bike has stalled in its place..
i think the main thing i want to express is that it only dies once i stop, turn the bike around and try to take off. higher revs seems ok. oh and once the bike has been started initally and i take off it is fine.
spark colour? you mean the actualy "spark" dave? i will have a look soon. _________________ Philip Ahn

Yeah, the actual spark - take the plug out of the cylinder and with it still connected to the lead and resting on the engine, kick it over (best get someone else to so you can look).
Is it just that the idle is too low? What RPM does it sit at tick-over? _________________ MC21SP Plaything
