Float height gauge and oil leak!

Thu Oct 11, 2012 3:22 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Does anyone know if the float height gauge (as shown in the manual) is available in the UK.

I find that there is an oil leak from my bike. It is constant at about 4 drips a day...don't laugh!
I have, for reasons of enjoying myself too much on my MC28, not been concentrating on finishing Noodle (MC21) but now have the space/time and nothing to distract me anymore.

When I finished building the motor I was paranoid about the oil pump system and changed pipes to clear type and lots of other 'paranoid' type stuff.
Anyway with a tank of fresh Super Unleaded, with a little oil added, I took her out for a little run. Started 'First Kick' and ticked over nicely with lots of smoke. Drove about 5 miles not revving to more than 4.5k (after warming up) but the motor refused to run 'clean'! It pulled ok but was hugely rich.
I then put her back onto the ramp and purchased the MC28...you know the rest.
Anyway, full attention back on Noodle I notice this oil leak from the front cylinder at the exhaust joint at its 'highest' point Confused
It is clean engine oil, it's Motul and is not used or burnt oil.

My first thought is that it is oil just running from the tank into the engine and finding the lowest point of exit which, if that is the case, means that the crank case must be full of oil.
Not wanting to sound too much like a dick does anyone have any ideas before taking the motor apart.

Mike

Open the gearbox filler and see if oil pours out or the level has dropped considerably.

Remove the spark plug and see if oil comes out.

Whip the exhaust off and have a look up it.

Seriously doubt that oil has filled your crankcases from the gearbox. There's some pretty meaty joints to get through...

I'd give it all a good clean off with GUNK or something similar, and see if you can spot the oil tracking from somewhere.

Mike, if the oil is not used or burnt it dont sound like its coming from inside the engine, you might want to check your oil reservoir is not leaking ie, pipe loose, cracked, etc, if its fresh oil, where else can it be coming from. Worth a try.

Are you sure all your nonstandard pipes and clamps are done up properly and oil compatible?

99.9% certain that it is engine oil. It's green in colour as per the Motul. Gearbox level is ok.

I'm away this weekend but will take a piccy on Monday and post it on here. The motor is really clean as I have just rebuilt it.

Can you smell the oil when you put a smidge onto your fingers? That will help you confirm what oil it is.

Not had a chance to take pipes off or anything else yet but the oil is 'definitely' unused engine oil.

My other question was about a float level gauge. Is there such a thing and if so where can I get one.

Just as easy to use a vernier caliper. Easy to source.

A vernier can be useful for all kinds of other jobs too, unlike the float gauge.

If you're desperate for one, I can do you a genuine Honda one for £40.

I hate to sound clever (well maybe not Wink ) but I have two verniers. One Mitutoyu that is about a million years old, but the display has decided to pack up, and a cheap modern one that cost about £12.
I am one of those sad creatures (although I am now at an age when I no longer apologise for it) who like a 'belt and braces' approach.
If the proper toll was around the £20 mark then fine...£40 is a bit steep. But thanks for the info.

I'll have the pipes of tomorrow and see why oil is dripping out of the front cylinder. Can't wait Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

That's the price from Honda, including the P&P. If I could do anything on it, I would. (Despite what some seem to think! Laughing)

Well, for all of you waiting for the next episode of my 'oil leak saga' I think/know that I have now found and cured the problem.

Although the oil looked as if it was coming from around the exhaust manifold area, with a process of kitchen roll pieces placed in strategic positions from the oil pump down, I felt that the leak had to be from the oil pump itself.
I removed the pump in desperation and THEN found the oil trail. I removed the two plates, cleaned all the surfaces and rubber seals and 'lightly' coated them with non setting sealant. Re fitted the pump and there has been no seepage (ooh nurse Embarassed ) for the last 3 days.
I have not yet run the motor since doing this, but the leak happened before without it running.

Fingers crossed.

Now about this float level gauge!!! Shocked

Scroll down the thread to read about setting the float height with a bog stock (and slightly rusty) tool you'll pick up for less than a tenner...

Thanks Dave.
Reading through I see that this is the way that I have done it. I notice that the imortant thing is NOT to let the little spring in the valve assembly compress, just allow it to let the needle point seat!

I did find that on one carb the float height measured differently from one side of the float to the other.

That's definitely not a good thing, as it can lead to different running between the cylinders.
